On 14th July 2005, I saw my pretty wife gave an interesting lecture on Parenting which I want to share with you here in my blog...here it goes as The Hindu says...
PARENTAL CONCERN: A group of parents at a special session of Propel Workshop organised by The Hindu Education Plus and AIMS Education on Thursday.
CHENNAI: Is your child a swan? Or perhaps she's a cow. No? Well maybe a goat or buffalo then. Before you draw yourself up indignantly to say that you wouldn't care to compare your child to any animal or bird, consider this: All children can be classified into one of the above categories according to their learning patterns, according to Eastern psychology, said
Dr.M.S. Priyadarshini, psychologist and student counsellor.
She was talking to about 600 parents about the right way to help their children get an education at the Propel workshop.
Organised by the AIMS Education and The Hindu Education Plus, the session was open to everyone.
The swan is an independent learner and does not need monitoring; the cow is a patient student, digesting everything that people around say; parrots are mechanical learners, they are conditioned to imitate everything told to them and have a problem thinking for themselves; goats are confused, thanks to all the karate lessons, paattu classes and dance not to mention the pressure to come first in class. They are easily distracted and don't really know what they want; as for the buffalo, she is thick-skinned and is difficult to get through to. "All these animals have their uses and good points. You as parents should find out how to handle them," said Dr. Priyadarshini.
Quite a hit
She categorised the parents into two: the potter and the gardener. The potters mould their child into what they want them to be. The gardeners are ideal parents as they provide everything their plant... er child needs to help it grow. The idea proved to be quite a hit with the parents. There were questions like "What do you do when you have a buffalo?" (The answer to this is to help sensitise the child.)
How nice to get a wife of this calibre....Lucky Me..!!!
