'Call center Romeos'
Heard of Dr.Suniti Solomon, social activist is also the founding Director of Y. R. G. Centre for AIDS Research & Education (YRG CARE), a retired Professor of Microbiology from the Madras Medical College.
In 1986, her laboratory documented the first evidence of HIV in India!!!Who had great struggle in proving to the Governement that we in India also have HIV positive victims.
Check out about Dr.Suniti Solomon's profile...http://www.yrgcare.org/overview/dr.suniti.htm
Now in her latest findings...
A new AIDS threat is rising in India's numerous call centers, where young staff are increasingly having unprotected sex with multiple partners in affairs developed during night shifts, a top AIDS expert has warned.
While India has made great strides in bringing down its HIV infection rate, the promiscuity among "call center Romeos" is a great concern, Dr.Suniti Solomon, who detected the first HIV case in India in 1986, told an international medical conference.

She said this is evident in Hindu activists' opposition to circumcision which is proven to help inhibit HIV transmission on the grounds that it is against tradition and religion of Hindu-majority India. Solomon said she does not expect India to accept circumcision for preventing HIV infections.
A recent government study to gauge the acceptance for circumcision triggered a massive backlash by Hindu fundamentalists, who called it "obnoxious" and "a conspiracy." "If you go out into the streets and say I will do this (circumcision) to reduce HIV, there will be a chaos," she said.
"Vaccines have failed. Microbicides have failed.
This is one tool we have in hand but we can't use it."
Isn't it quite important for the fundamentalist to ponder over it and act wisely??!!!

AIDS threat for BPO Romeos
Dr.Suniti Solomon's comments and observations made in an international forum, without any concrete data is uncalled for.
Being a mother of two kids and working in BPO since 5yrs, her statement comes as a rude shock and sounds atrocious. Dr suniti probably forgets that Doctors and Nurses also huddle together during nights, they are young, they are sexually active, are they not High Risk for HIV or may be since they are from the medical fraternity such data is never sought. Her irresponsible, attention drawing lewd comments highlighted by Newspapers is probably the only reason why such an article gets published.Press should refrain from publishing such ill conceived, premeditated statement funnelled more out of jaundiced notion, clearly evident from the comparison made between the salary of a Govt Doctor and a BPO employee fresh out of college.
Such news though hurts the sentiments it cannot dampen the fire in the 1.3 Million (growing by the day) youth of this country employed in BPO's

Thanks for your comment.
hmm.. I dont see how circumcision can prevent AIDS.. being a student of science, I have to question how circumcision is beneficial..
I agree with the BPO culture in India is a bit on the darker side, but its coz these employees have never been taught how to handle stress and extra money tht comes with a BPO job.. once tht is done the picture will change for good..
Nice post mate.. More of these awaited :)
Hi arshat, there are lot of medical reasons to go for circumsision...http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/menshealth/facts/circumcision.htm
yes your idea of grooming the young with good investment plans will be more advisable.
I object to the statement - "Call centre Romeos", why not "Call centre Juliets." ??
Actually, i read in an article that most of the affairs are women initiated. There is also a scientific/ behavioural fact that men look for excitement in work challenges and sports. Whereas, women are more prone to look for excitements from relationships!!!

Yeah, answering queries about docors and nurses - one of my close relaives is a doctor. And she has witnessed doctors hugging nurses scenarios in government hospitals during the night shifts.
One more argument from her end was, even though docors work together the staff or rest room for men and women were always separate. But that is not the situation in a BPO or other nocturnal duty stations!!!
